Ecuador: Vice-president Jorge Glas has voluntarily submitted himself for questioning by prosecutors from the attorney general’s office investigating the government corruption case centred round Brazilian engineering firm Odebrecht. Glas, who served as strategic sectors minister (2010-2012) and has been vice-president since 2013, has been accused of being part of the corruption ring that received bribes from Odebrecht in exchange for the awarding of lucrative state construction contracts in Ecuador. The vice-president was quizzed by prosecutors for two hours. Afterwards, Glas’ office issued a statement reiterating that the vice-president was prepared to continue collaborating to clear the case and in support of “transparency and the defence of national interests”. However, opposition national legislators have called for the attorney general’s office to ban Glas and other former officials in the Rafael Correa administration (2007-2017), including the former president himself, from leaving the country until the Odebrecht investigations are concluded.
