Enemies of the state

Critics of the Enrique Peña Nieto administration, including activists, lawyers, journalists, and opposition politicians, have accused the Mexican government of spying on them after infiltrating their smartphones. This has sparked concern that the ruling Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI) party is supressing freedom of speech and slipping back into the authoritarian tendencies employed during its 70-years of one-party rule (1930-2000).
