In brief: Peru, Colombia

Peru: The Federación Médica Peruana (FMP), the country’s main doctors’ association, has launched an indefinite national strike in demand of improved pay and working conditions. The strike has been adhered to by the majority of the FMP’s 8,000 members, leading to the suspension of medical services in hospitals around the country. This prompted the health ministry (Minsa) to announce that the government has agreed to increase the health sector allocation in its 2018 draft budget in an effort to meet the FMP’s demands. However, it is not clear if this will ease the pressure on Minsa head, Patricia García, as the FMP has called for her resignation for her failure to adequately address the sector’s problems.
