COLOMBIA |
FMD outbreak. On 24 June Colombia’s agricultural institute (ICA) reported that it had detected an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) in a herd of bovine cattle in a ranch in the north-eastern department of Arauca, on the border with Venezuela. Colombia was declared FMD free in 2009, so the ICA’s report forced the agriculture ministry to notify the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) immediately of the outbreak of the disease, which could lead to a review of Colombia’s status. The loss of the FMD free status would lead to the imposition of restrictions on Colombian beef exports in international markets.
