New WB report highlights higher education limits in the Andean

According to a World Bank (WB) report on higher education in Latin America & the Caribbean (LAC), released last month, the Andean sub-region falls short when it comes to the expansion of higher education institutions (HEI). The WB report addresses questions of quality, variety, and equity in higher education across the region, proposing solutions for policy-makers. It notes that, since the early 2000s, LAC has experienced a large expansion of HEIs and programmes with 25% of the HEIs and 50% of the programmes created since then. However, there was comparatively little expansion in the Andean sub-region. The number of new HEIs increased by less than 50 in Colombia, Bolivia, and Ecuador while the number of HEIs in Peru dropped by more than 50, due to the closure of many private HEIs. Also, only about ten of the world’s 500 top HEIs are in LAC, none of these are in the Andean region.
