Refusing to resume aerial spraying of coca

“We will not heed the requests made by the US. Colombia will not resume the aerial spraying of glyphosates and this is a government position”. This was the clear answer that Colombia’s environment minister Luis Gilberto Murillo gave to questions about the recent calls by the US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson for the Colombian government to reconsider its 2015 decision to stop the aerial spraying of illegal coca plantations with glyphosate herbicides as part of its coca eradication programmes. The Colombian government’s refusal to reconsider this decision has the potential to turn into a major point of contention with the US, which could lead to significant bilateral tensions.
