Mexico: Trouble at the resorts

In the ebb and flow of criminal violence across Mexico, the authorities have been eager to keep important tourist resorts as peaceful and safe as possible; tourism after all accounts for 8.5% of the country’s GDP. Things have nevertheless gone badly in Acapulco, where tourists have largely been scared away by regular shoot-outs. Now the violence seems to be threatening Los Cabos, also on the Pacific, and Cancún, on Mexico’s Caribbean coast.
