Mexico: The state of Sinaloa
The Sinaloa cartel, once considered the most powerful criminal organisation in Mexico, has been in decline since last year’s recapture of its leader, Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán, and his extradition to the US at the beginning of this year. There are various different scenarios for what may happen to a top cartel after its leadership is captured or eliminated. Determining which of these is actually playing out for the Sinaloa drug trafficking organisation (DTO) has big implications for the security strategy followed by this government, and by its successor administration.
