Cartistas capture congress

In the wake of Paraguay’s political crisis created by the efforts of members of the ruling Asociación Nacional Republicana-Partido Colorado (ANR-PC) party loyal to President Horacio Cartes to push through a constitutional amendment to allow for presidential re-election [RBS-17-05], the seeds of a new crisis appear to have been sowed. With the help of some circumstantial allies, Cartista legislators have succeeded in wrestling control of the leadership positions in the national congress from their political opponents. This has been denounced by the Cartistas’ opponents as another affront to the constitution and the prelude to a renewed attempt to impose presidential re-election so that Cartes may benefit from it in the future, if not in next year’s general elections.
