Electoral repercussions of Odebrecht scandal

The scandal surrounding the Brazilian engineering firm Odebrecht could play a key role in Argentina’s midterm federal legislative elections due this October. In theory this ought to suit President Mauricio Macri as he seeks to expand the federal congressional presence of his ruling centre-right Cambiemos coalition, but in practice he could be damaged too. Macri has expressed zero tolerance for corruption, which he alleges proliferated during the government of his predecessor, Cristina Fernández (2007-2015), so he must emerge squeaky clean from the Odebrecht case to retain his credibility. Macri has not personally implicated in accepting Odebrecht bribes but close associates have.
