Social discontent grows in Brazil

Since assuming office last year in the wake of the impeachment of former president Dilma Rousseff (2011-2016), President Michel Temer, who was never popular, has weathered multiple protests against his government from diverse social movements. While demonstrators’ demands vary greatly, calling the government out on impunity has become a running theme. Over the last few months, protests have intensified in both size and frequency after multiple corruption allegations have delivered a near-fatal blow to the Temer government.
