In brief: Mexico

*The head of the Mexico City public works & services secretariat (Sobse), Edgar Tungüí, has revealed that every day that work on the building of the new ‘L7’ line of the Metrobús bus rapid system is stopped costs the Mexico City municipal government M$2.5m (US$139,353) in wages paid to contracted workers, and called for the current suspension of the project to be lifted. Tungüí’s remarks come after a local judge on 12 June ordered the suspension of the project while he considers a complaint presented by the Academia Mexicana de Derecho Ambiental (Amda) NGO that the proposed route passing through some protected ‘green areas’ of Mexico City would produce irreversible damage to the local environment.
