In brief: Peru, Bolivia/Chile

Peru: During a state visit to Madrid, Spain, Peru’s President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski called on Spanish construction companies to participate in national reconstruction efforts following a period of intense flooding. They would replace other international companies marred by corruption scandals such as Brazilian construction company Odebrecht. During a meeting with 400 business executives, Spanish executives reaffirmed their interest in expanding in Peru, where Spain is the number one foreign investor (accounting for 19% of all foreign investment).

Bolivia/Chile: The Bolivian defence minister, Reymi Ferreira, has announced the establishment from July of fences in 11 border crossings with Chile in what he said was an effort to crack down on the entry of trucks carrying contraband to Bolivia. This action follows the arrest by Chilean authorities in March of nine Bolivians – two members of the military and seven customs officials. Bolivia maintained that the officials were carrying out an operation against contraband when they were arrested, while the Chilean government maintains that they had carried out an armed cross-border incursion in order to steal trucks.
