LatinNews Regional Monitor: Mexico - 6 June 2017

In brief: Mexico

The US government has announced that it has extended for another 24 hours the deadline it had set to reach a deal with Mexico on the current dispute over bilateral sugar trade. A statement by the US Department of Commerce said that Secretary Wilbur Ross has decided to extend the deadline on the bilateral negotiations over the price of subsidised Mexican sugar exports, which US producers have complained undercuts them. The US has threatened to impose import duties on Mexican sugar imports as a response. But Ross has said that he is “optimistic” that the two countries are close to reaching an agreement that would avoid this. The announcement comes after Ross met Mexico’s Economy Minister, Ildefonso Guajardo, in Washington DC on 5 June to discuss the matter.
