Dominican Republic/Haiti: The Dominican Republic’s government led by President Danilo Medina has deployed 574 soldiers to the border with Haiti as part of ‘operation shield’, an operation designed to increase “vigilance and protection of national territory”. The soldiers will remain there from 5-12 June. Since the announcement in April that the United Nations Stabilisation Mission in Haiti (Minustah) would end in October 2017, the Medina government has announced plans to send 1,000 soldiers to reinforce public security at the shared border.
