In brief: Chile

Chile: Campaigning has officially begun for the 2 July presidential primaries ahead of the 19 November general elections. Primaries are being held by the main centre-right opposition Chile Vamos coalition (whose main partners are Unión Demócrata Independiente and Renovación Nacional) and by the leftist opposition Frente Amplio coalition. Presidential pre-candidates for Chile Vamos are former president Sebastián Piñera (2010-2014), who is standing as an independent; national deputy Felipe Kast of the Evolución Política party; and national senator Manuel José Ossandón, another independent. Those competing for the Frente Amplio are independents Beatriz Sánchez, a journalist, and Alberto Mayol, a sociologist. The most recent poll on voting preferences for the presidency by local pollster Adimark, released on 1 June, showed Piñera remains in first place with 25%, followed by independent Senator Alejandro Guillier – the candidate backed by most parties in the leftist ruling Nueva Mayoría coalition - who is on 21%; Sánchez is third on 11%; and Ossandón is fourth, with 4%.
