In brief: Peru, Colombia

Peru: Transport & Communications Minister Bruno Giuffra has announced that the government has reached an agreement with local consortium Kuntur Wasi (KW) to abandon the public-private contract to build a new international airport in Chinchero, Cusco region, after the contract between both parties was found to be riddled with irregularities. The announcement comes just a few days after Giuffra said that the government was trying to renegotiate the contract with KW. But Giuffra has said that the contract signed under the previous administration, led by former president Ollanta Humala (2011-2016), had been “badly” drawn up. The minister said that the incumbent government led by President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski is now negotiating with KW to pay for the costs it has already incurred in relation to the Chinchero airport project (such as the engineering equipment the company has bought), in order to avoid any litigation from the firm.
