Fighting social discontent on various fronts

The Colombian government led by President Juan Manuel Santos has been facing a series of mass protests from at least three different groups since mid-May. While the demands of the protesters are varied, they seem to have the same root cause: the central government’s failure to deliver on promises of increased financial support. This has been a recurring issue for the Santos administration, but with Colombia’s economy still struggling to pick up the pace, it is difficult to see how these demands will be addressed. Yet resolving these issues could prove critical to securing the continuation of the Santos administration political project after next year’s general election.
