Haiti: New UN mission announced in Haiti

After 13 years in the country, the tenure of the UN Stabilisation Mission in Haiti (Minustah) will end in October 2017. This followed a vote which took place on 13 April by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to extend Minustah’s mandate for a final six-month period. With the UN to deploy a smaller successor peacekeeping mission, reassurances by top government officials that the country is “in a position to guarantee security” have yet to convince its neighbour, the Dominican Republic, which has announced plans to send 1,000 soldiers to the border.
