Carabineros hit by scandal

This month Chile’s national attorney general’s office announced that a total of 43 former and current members of the country’s militarised police (Carabineros) had been charged with misuse of public funds and money laundering for alleged fraud totalling some Cl$17.5bn (US$26m). With a further 13 others reportedly due to be charged on 30 May, Attorney General Jorge Abbott is describing it as the biggest case of fraud since the reform of the national criminal justice system was completed in 2005. The scandal is a major blow to the credibility of Carabineros – traditionally one of Chile’s most trusted institutions. It leaves the Nueva Mayoría coalition government led by President Michelle Bachelet under continued pressure to ensure that the those guilty of wrongdoing are brought to justice.
