PDC to go it alone

Chile’s ruling Nueva Mayoría coalition’s biggest and most centrist party, the Partido Demócrata Cristiano (PDC), has ended speculation. At the end of last month, the PDC announced that it would not be taking part in the 2 July party primaries and, for the first time in 28 years, would field its own separate presidential candidate – its leader Carolina Goic. With the rest of the leftist ruling coalition now effectively also abandoning the primaries, having swung behind independent Senator Alejandro Guillier, the splits in the Left continue to play into the hands of current favourite to win the presidential race in the November general elections, former president Sebastián Piñera (2006-2010). However, Piñera, who launched his bid to win the presidential nomination for the centre-right Chile Vamos opposition coalition in March, is facing his own problems.
