Bolivia: Thousands of people took to the streets of Bolivia’s capital, La Paz, to protest against an initiative currently being discussed in the bicameral national legislature which would allow women living in extreme poverty, and without sufficient resources, to have an abortion within the first eight weeks of a pregnancy. Under Bolivian law, abortions are permitted when the pregnancy is the result of rape or if the procedure is necessary to protect the life or health of the mother.
