In brief: El Salvador

El Salvador: A local judge has reopened one of the most emblematic cases of human rights violations committed during the country’s 1980-1992 civil war – the 1980 assassination of Archbishop Oscar Romero. The move follows a July 2016 ruling by the constitutional chamber (SC) of El Salvador's supreme court (CSJ), which declared unconstitutional some aspects of the country’s 1993 amnesty law that prevents prosecution for crimes committed during the civil war. The main suspect in Romero’s murder case is a retired Salvadoran air force captain, Alvaro Rafael Saravia, who had his case dismissed in 1993 as a result of the amnesty law.
