ARGENTINA-BOLIVIA-CHILE: Gas spat erupts

Diplomatic relations between Argentina and Bolivia have come under strain amid complaints by the government led by President Evo Morales that its Argentine counterpart is casting doubt over Bolivia’s ability to meet its natural gas export commitments. This follows reports that Argentina’s state-owned energy company Enarsa is poised to renew a deal with Chile to buy natural gas to meet peak demand during the June-August winter period – a process which first began in 2016. The claims come as the Morales administration is seeking to deepen energy cooperation with Brazil, traditionally its chief energy export market (see sidebar).
