Canada and Mexico seek to close ranks

Canada and Mexico are strengthening their bilateral ties as they prepare to defend their positions in the North American Free Trade Agreement (Nafta). Their respective roles in the trade bloc have been challenged by US President Donald Trump, raising concerns about the future of trilateral economic relations. After several months of attacking Mexico, Trump recently, and for the first time, complained that Nafta currently provides more benefits to Canada than the US. As the prospect that the Trump administration will seek to protect narrow US interests in its proposed Nafta renegotiations increases, Mexico may find Canada to be a good partner in its efforts to present a strong defence of Nafta against plans to dismantle it.
