Paraguay: Finance Minister Santiago Peña has formally requested a five-day leave of absence starting from today (8 May). The announcement has intensified speculation that Peña, a close aide of President Horacio Cartes, may be preparing to launch his candidacy for the presidential nomination of the ruling Asociación Nacional Republicana-Partido Colorado (ANR-PC) party ahead of the 2018 general elections. Peña did not provide any reasons behind his leave request but has announced that he will accompany the ANR-PC governor of Itapúa department, Luis Gneiting, another ANR-PC presidential pre-candidate, during a tour of Itapúa and Alto Paraná departments to meet with local residents.
