The director of Colombia’s Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology and Environmental Studies (Ideam), Omar Franco, recently presented the findings of a two-year project financed by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) which monitored tropical Andean glaciers. According to the report’s findings, which were presented on 27 March, over the last 50 years, 40% of the glacial area of the Tropical Andes, which cover parts of Colombia, Venezuela, Peru, Ecuador and Bolivia, have disappeared.
