Moreno seals victory in Ecuador; faces stern test

Lenín Moreno will become Ecuador’s 44th head of state on 24 May after narrowly defeating Guillermo Lasso in a second round run-off on 2 April. In many ways Moreno is the continuity candidate. He belongs to the left-wing Alianza País (AP) of outgoing President Rafael Correa, served as his vice-president for over six years, and has promised to deepen his Citizens’ Revolution. But in other ways Moreno’s presidency will provide a marked contrast to that of Correa’s. Correa imbued the Citizens’ Revolution with a personalism which will not transfer to Moreno. While it will not unravel as spectacularly as Venezuela’s Bolivarian Revolution since the death in 2013 of its progenitor, the late President Hugo Chávez (1999-2013), preserving the unity of Ecuador’s Revolution amid difficult economic times without Correa’s charismatic authoritarianism will provide Moreno with a huge challenge.
