* The federal senate has unanimously approved a new bill aimed at preventing torture and other forms of degrading and inhuman treatment of individuals by the security forces. The approval of the bill, which introduces changes to Mexico’s federal penal code, national human rights legislation, and the national public security system, was celebrated by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Mexico, which noted that it would bring Mexican legislation into line with international standards.
