Macri undeterred by successful general strike

“Argentina will grow more than any other country over the next 20 years.” This bold assertion was made by Argentina’s President Mauricio Macri on 6 April during the opening conference of the World Economic Forum (WEF) on Latin America, which he hosted in the city of Buenos Aires. Macri pointedly added: “It is impossible to have a growth model sustained by significant corruption,” in a swipe at the 12 years of successive governments from the leftist Frente para la Victoria (FPV, Kirchneristas) that preceded that of his ruling centre-right Cambiemos coalition. While Macri was addressing the WEF, the streets of the capital were eerily empty as Argentina’s trade unions staged the first general strike since he took office in December 2015.
