Meirelles struggles to sell economic reform agenda

Finance minister Henrique Meirelles has stepped up to the daunting task of breathing new life into Brazil’s domestic economy by promoting a series of ambitious economic reforms. The most important of these is a pensions reform bill, dubbed “the mother of all reforms”, designed to reduce Brazil’s burdensome fiscal deficit. But the reform bill has hit a wall in the national congress, casting doubt on whether Meirelles has the political nous to steer it through the legislature and successfully bring Brazil out of economic recession.
