Cracks deepen in Nueva Mayoría

The Partido Socialista (PS), a member of Chile’s leftist ruling Nueva Mayoría coalition, has named independent Senator Alejandro Guillier as its presidential pre-candidate, ahead of July Nueva Mayoría-wide primaries and the 17 November general elections. The PS’s endorsement of Guillier, who has already been declared as the presidential pre-candidate of the Partido Radical (PR), another Nueva Mayoría member, has further exposed cracks within the ruling coalition. Carolina Goic, the presidential pre-candidate of Nueva Mayoría’s largest and most centrist party, the Partido Demócrata Cristiano (PDC), is now casting doubt over whether the PDC will even compete in the coalition’s primaries. A divided Left will ultimately benefit the current frontrunner in the pre-electoral presidential polls, former president Sebastián Piñera (2006-2010), who last month ended speculation and launched his presidential candidacy for the centre-right opposition Chile Vamos coalition, whose main members are the centre-right Renovación Nacional (RN) and the right-wing Unión Demócrata Independiente (UDI).
