Long-awaited marijuana initiative enacted

Since the passage of a law legalising the production and sale of marijuana in December 2013, the Uruguayan government has been widely criticised for the glacial pace at which it has approached implementation. That day, however, is now rapidly approaching. On 2 May, a government consumer registry will open for Uruguayan users of marijuana over the age of 18 to enrol. The sale of legal marijuana in pharmacies will begin in early to mid-July.
