Peru: The national congress has approved the national reconstruction project presented by the government led by President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski in response to the considerable damage produced by the heavy rains and flooding in north and central areas of the country this year as result of the ‘El Niño Costero’ climatic phenomenon. The project, which includes a PEN8bn (US$2.4bn) budget allocation for the rebuilding and improvement of damaged roadways in affected areas, was approved by the opposition-controlled congress after some minor amendments where introduced by opposition deputies pertaining to the ‘reconstruction authority’, which will be in charge of managing these rebuilding projects, amid concerns about a lack of transparency.
