In brief: Mexico

* The latest instalment of the World Press Freedom Index compiled by the international NGO Reporters Without Borders (RSF) ranks Mexico 147th out of 180 countries surveyed, making it the second lowest ranked country in Latin America behind Cuba (173rd). Although Mexico’s ranking has increased by three positions since last year’s report, RSF notes that the country’s ranking has greatly deteriorated since 2000, when it was ranked 75th, due to the threat posed by organised crime on the press in the country.
