EL SALVADOR: Bukele rules out presidential bid

The popular mayor of San Salvador, Nayib Bukele, of the ruling left-wing Frente Farabundo Martí para la Liberación Nacional (FMLN), will run for re-election in 2018. The announcement, which Bukele made via Facebook on 2 April, has put an end to speculation over whether he would stand as the FMLN’s presidential candidate in the 2019 elections. Despite being elected on the FMLN ticket, in all his political campaigns thus far the young mayor has remained something of an outsider in the party. Bukele, who had a public disagreement with the FMLN’s secretary general, Medardo González, is often critical of the FMLN government led by President Salvador Sánchez Cerén.
