HONDURAS: Who best to challenge JOH?

Open national primary elections on 12 March confirmed President Juan Orlando Hernández as the presidential candidate for the ruling Partido Nacional (PN) in November’s general election. A controversial supreme court decision ruling inapplicable the constitutional ban on re-election opened the way for Hernández to bid for a second term. His chief rivals will be Xiomara Castro, of the radical left-wing Libertad y Refundación (Libre), and Luis Zelaya of the traditional Partido Liberal (PL). Castro has urged Zelaya and the PL to forge an alliance with Libre and its allies against Hernández and the PN. Given that the PN took 52% of the total votes cast in the primaries, such an alliance appears urgent to stop the re-election of Hernández. So far, however, there is little sign that opposition unity will be forthcoming.
