DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: International pressure to address corruption mounts as Mesicic visits
A mission from the Organization of American States (OAS)’s mechanism for the follow-up of the implementation of the Inter-American Convention against Corruption (Mesicic) visited the Dominican Republic (DR) this month. The visit came amid ongoing public demonstrations calling for the authorities to expedite investigations into the major corruption case involving the Brazilian engineering firm Odebrecht and local government officials. The issue remains a problem for the Partido de la Liberación Dominicana (PLD) government led by President Danilo Medina, which faces accusations of foot-dragging in the investigations for fear that these could prove damaging to the ruling party.
