State governments’ weakness exposed again

The extent to which Mexican state government officials remain prone to being corrupted has once again been exposed. In a matter of weeks, arrest warrants have been issued against two former governors for corruption, while the head of a gubernatorial attorney general’s office has been arrested in the US on suspicion of drug trafficking. The cases place renewed scrutiny on the federal government’s commitment to combating corruption and organised crime. Not least because all of the former and current officials involved are members of the nationally ruling Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI).
