The hollowing out of Venezuela’s political scene
Apparently intent on resisting international pressure, President Nicolás Maduro has made clear that the radical left-wing Bolivarian movement will not contemplate elections until the ruling Partido Socialista Unido de Venezuela (PSUV) can be sure of winning them. In support of that, the national electoral council (CNE) is currently obliging all political parties but the PSUV to undergo a process of re-registration. To date, just four opposition outfits appear to have met the criteria to retain their status as national political parties. Even so, the CNE will have the final word in July. The opposition fears that the CNE is seeking to engineer a ‘Nicaraguan solution’, whereby nominally democratic elections are held, but without a remotely competitive ballot.
