Chile: Fresh Mapuche unrest in Araucanía

An arson attack that took place this month in Lautaro commune, Araucanía region, has been described one of the worst in the last two decades and has been attributed to the long-running indigenous Mapuche conflict. This stems from historic claims to ancestral lands in the Araucanía, Los Ríos and Bío Bío regions. The attack ups the pressure on the unpopular Nueva Mayoría coalition government led by President Michelle Bachelet to address what is widely perceived as one of its worst areas of governance.
