Region: New trends in the drugs business

The publication in March of the two-volume International Narcotics Control Strategy Report (INCSR) by the US State Department gives an opportunity to assess evolving trends in the illicit drugs business. We have identified four that are of particular importance to Latin America and the Caribbean. They are, first, the rise of heroin and associated fentanyl consumption in the United States; second, the rise in cocaine production in Colombia; third the revival of the Central American drugs trafficking corridor; and fourth, the continued dynamism of drugs-related money laundering in various parts of the region, including the Caribbean.
