Re-election push behind Guairá political crisis?

There has been a clear attempt to unjustly remove the governor of Paraguay’s Guairá department. This is the view held in Paraguay after the Guairá state legislature accepted and processed the resignation of the elected governor, Rodolfo Friedmann, even though he denies having tendered his resignation. What remains unclear is, what are the underlying motives behind the move, which has been halted by the courts? But there are widespread suspicions that it may be related to the deepening internal divisions within the ruling Asociación Nacional Republicana-Partido Colorado (ANR-PC) over the attempts by the supporters of President Horacio Cartes (Cartistas) to push through a constitutional amendment this year allowing presidential re-election, so that Cartes may seek to stand for election again in next year’s general elections.
