Role of Mexico’s military under growing scrutiny

More than a decade after former president Felipe Calderón (2006-2012), of the right-wing Partido Acción Nacional (PAN) party, first declared a ‘war on drugs’, organised crime and drug trafficking continues to take its toll in Mexico. Since 2006 an average of 25 Mexicans have been murdered per day (see sidebar), prompting President Enrique Peña Nieto to reassess the government’s security policy.
