Establishing dialogue with the Trump administration

The Mexican government led by President Enrique Peña Nieto has begun the process of establishing dialogue with the new US administration led by President Donald Trump. After cancelling his scheduled visit to Washington DC, where he had been invited to discuss the bilateral agenda with Trump, Peña Nieto met with two top Trump administration officials in Mexico City in late February. The visit by US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and US Secretary of Homeland Security John Kelly served to reset the bilateral relation, but as Mexican government officials have noted, finding common ground will be a “long” and “complex” process. Peña Nieto cancelled his Washington trip in rejection of the executive orders calling for the expedited deportation of undocumented migrants living in the US and the building of a border wall to stop illegal migration from Mexico [RM-17-02].
