Peace negotiations finally get underway

After months of exploratory talks and a failed attempt last year, the Colombian government led by President Juan Manuel Santos has finally succeeded in establishing a formal peace negotiating table with the country’s second-largest leftist guerrilla group, the Ejército de Liberación Nacional (ELN). The start of this peace dialogue has sparked optimism that Colombia is now closer than ever to achieving ‘total peace’ after the Santos administration signed a peace deal with the main guerrilla group, the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc), which is now in the process of being implemented [RA-16-12]. However, recent actions by the ELN suggest that these peace talks may prove to be even more difficult than those with the Farc, with the effective end of Colombia’s long internal armed conflict further away than it initially appeared.
