Aladi calls for common front against Trump

Region: On 30 January, Carlos Alberto ‘Chacho’ Álvarez, the Secretary General of the Latin American Integration Association (Aladi), issued a statement proposing that Latin American countries work together to form a comprehensive trade agreement in response to the “aggressive” behaviour by the US towards Mexico. This was in response to the executive order signed by US President Donald Trump on 25 January to “secure the southern border of the US through the immediate construction of a physical wall on the southern border” with the suggestion that a 20% tax on Mexican imports may be used to fund its construction. In the statement, Argentine national Álvarez highlighted that objection by many Latin American countries to the construction of the border wall was both “opportune and necessary”. He also declared that an aggressive political action against any Latin American country should be challenged “with a Latin American sense of belonging and solidarity”. The statement adds that Aladi would aim to “begin a dialogue” to advance and regionalise pre-existing agreements between countries on a wider Latin American scale to benefit both commerce and integration.
