Colombia: Santos buoyed by peace prospects

Colombia’s President Juan Manuel Santos confidently asserted during his appearance at the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos this month that the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc) guerrillas would be gathered in 27 encampments, or ‘concentration zones’, around the country before the end of January. He said it was truly momentous seeing television pictures of guerrillas from the Farc’s most powerful military front, the Bloque Sur, coming down from the mountains to gather in these camps. Santos is also hopeful that “complete peace” could be achieved before the end of his mandate in August 2018 after his government reached an agreement with the country’s second-largest guerrilla group, Ejército de Liberación Nacional (ELN), to begin formal peace negotiations on 7 February.
