Another source of pressure on the Bachelet government

As is often the case at the start of the year, fresh unrest in Chile’s southern Araucanía area – comprising the contiguous Araucanía, Los Ríos, and Bío Bío regions – linked to the indigenous Mapuche conflict, has left the Nueva Mayoria coalition government led by President Michelle Bachelet vulnerable to fresh criticism regarding its handling of the long-running conflict. With the general elections now less than a year away, it is also threatening to become an electoral issue.
