GUATEMALA: Morales trumpets security gains in first year in office

President Jimmy Morales this month marked the first year in office of his conservative Frente de Convergencia Nacional (FCN-Nación) government. He is trumpeting a drop in crime and violence as his administration’s biggest achievement so far. His claims come, however, amid ongoing doubts over the pledge which effectively won him the four-year mandate – to crack down on official corruption, a platform forged in the wake of the string of scandals which ultimately forced former President Otto Pérez Molina and his vice president Roxana Baldetti (Partido Patriota, 2012-2015), to step down in 2015.
